Peterhead Bowling Club Visits Brookfield

1901–2026 β€’ 125 Years of Bowls, Friendship & Fellowship

Both Brookfield Bowling Club and Peterhead Bowling Club were founded 125 years ago, in 1901. What better way to celebrate this remarkable shared milestone than by bringing the two clubs together on the bowling green?

To mark their joint 125th anniversary, the clubs arranged a special series of fixtures, with each club travelling the length of the country to visit the other, enjoy each other’s company and, of course, play a little bowls along the way.

Brookfield made the journey north to Peterhead in April, and on 19 September it was Peterhead’s turn to make the return journey, bringing the two clubs together once again to celebrate their shared history and enjoy an afternoon of bowls and friendship.

πŸ† A Special Connection to Brookfield’s History

The first and oldest of Brookfield’s bowling trophies was presented in 1903 by Provost Thomson. How appropriate, then, that for the second meeting of our anniversary year, this time at Brookfield, we were honoured to welcome Councillor Cathy McEwan, Deputy Provost of Renfrewshire, together with Mr Guljar (David) Shan, Deputy Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, representing Lord-Lieutenant Colonel Peter McCarthy.

Councillor McEwan offered hearty congratulations to both clubs on reaching this wonderful milestone and presented Brookfield President Michael Orr with a commemorative gift to mark the occasion.

Mr Guljar (David) Shan then spoke on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III, conveying Royal congratulations and encouragement to both clubs as they look forward to the next 125 years.

Our distinguished guests then took time to watch the match get underway β€” although the weather was certainly doing its best to discourage an afternoon on the green!

πŸŽ—οΈ Gifts, Friendship & a Little Rain

As part of the celebrations, Peterhead Bowling Club presented Brookfield with a commemorative pennant, while Brookfield presented Peterhead with a silver quaich to mark their 125th anniversary.

The afternoon’s game was unfortunately brought to a premature end after just 11 ends, with the rain proving a little too much for everyone. Perhaps, too, the prospect of a warm afternoon tea and some welcome refreshments was beginning to look rather more attractive than standing out in the increasingly inhospitable weather!

On the bowling front, it was Peterhead who took the honours, winning the match 57–43. To Brookfield’s delight, however, there was some consolation: Carol, Peterhead’s President, won the President’s Rink, just as Brookfield President Michael had done when the clubs met at Peterhead in April.

With one President’s Rink victory apiece, Carol announced with a smile:

β€œWe are now at peels with one game each β€” perhaps we should make this a yearly fixture.”

And we suspect that was a suggestion which received plenty of support!

πŸ₯‚ Here’s to the Next 125 Years

What began 125 years ago as two newly formed bowling clubs has developed into two clubs with proud histories, strong traditions and, most importantly, a shared enjoyment of the game and the friendships that bowls creates.

Our thanks go to everyone who travelled from Peterhead to join us, to our distinguished guests, and to all the members who helped make the day such a memorable part of Brookfield Bowling Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

Here’s to friendship, fellowship and the next 125 years of bowls!
